Iran has launched a "severe retaliation" against Israel after it bombed the southern outskirts of Beirut, a stronghold of the pro-Iranian organization Hezbollah. The Iranian military leadership announced the cessation of operations, without Israel currently providing an official response.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran remains at the "negotiating table," but emphasized that the country will not give up its military response capability. He asserted that defense and diplomacy are the pillars of national power.
The escalation of tensions was preceded by an Israeli attack on a petrochemical plant in southwestern Iran, which Israel claims is involved in the ballistic missile program. In response, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps launched an attack on a facility near the city of Haifa. International leaders have called on both parties to immediately cease fire exchanges.
