An IndiGo Airbus A321 carrying more than 180 passengers on board made an emergency landing on Sunday, October 11, at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, after a power bank caught fire in an overhead luggage compartment. The incident occurred during flight 6E 6115, traveling from Delhi to Chennai. The aircraft took off at 1:30 p.m. local time and was scheduled to arrive at its destination at 4:00 p.m., but the pilots diverted the flight and landed in Hyderabad at 3:59 p.m.
Images shared on social media show smoke and flames in the cabin. Passengers attempted to contain the fire, while cabin crew intervened with firefighting equipment. The fire was brought under control before landing, and no one was injured.
IndiGo said another aircraft was made available to passengers so they could continue their journey to Chennai. The airline provided drinks, snacks, and updated information.
The incident draws renewed attention to the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries. In May 2026, six people were injured in a similar fire aboard an IndiGo aircraft in Chandigarh.
