A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330 flying from Barcelona to Boston on Sunday made an emergency landing at Porto Airport in Portugal after the crew detected a technical problem and the cabin filled with smoke.
The aircraft, which had 296 passengers on board, took off from Barcelona and was over the Atlantic Ocean when the crew noticed the smoke. The pilots decided to quickly turn back toward the continent and requested an emergency landing in Porto, northern Portugal.
According to Civil Protection, 14 passengers received medical attention at the airport after inhaling smoke. Four of them were considered lightly injured and were taken to hospital for further examinations.
The incident occurred during flight DL251. Aviation authorities are investigating the exact cause of the technical failure that led to the smoke appearing in the cabin. Delta Air Lines has not provided any further details about the nature of the problem so far.
