Iceland will vote on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in a crucial referendum regarding the reopening of accession negotiations to the European Union, suspended for more than a decade.

This time, Brussels is interested in the strategic position of the island in the Arctic, in the context of growing distrust towards the United States as a guarantor of security.

Iceland, centrally located in the North Atlantic, plays an important role in defending Europe, especially against Russian threats.

The referendum is different from the one in 2009, when the accession request was submitted during the financial crisis. Now, internal discussions focus on fishing, sovereignty, and the economy, and experts suggest that the vote reflects a desire to diversify strategic dependencies. Technical obstacles remain, especially in the fishing sector, but Iceland does not face a veto from other member states.

The outcome of the referendum could influence the EU's enlargement process, enhancing the attractiveness of the European project for other aspiring countries.
