The Icelanders are called to a referendum on Saturday, August 29, to decide whether to resume the suspended accession negotiations with the European Union, which were halted in 2013.

Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir stated that a favorable vote could provide clarity and opportunities for the island, especially in the fishing sector, which is crucial for the national economy.

The question of the referendum concerns the reopening of discussions with Brussels, and a positive vote would require a new referendum for any final agreement.

Iceland applied for membership in 2009, but negotiations were suspended due to an eurosceptic coalition.

Recent geopolitical changes, such as the invasion of Ukraine, have influenced the debate, and polls show a divided public opinion.

Fishing, an essential sector, could be a point of contention in negotiations, and Icelandic officials emphasize the need to maintain sovereignty in this area.
