Preliminary results in Iceland: The "Yes" camp leads in the vote regarding the resumption of negotiations with the EU

With a narrow majority, Icelandic voters supported the government's proposal to resume negotiations for joining the European Union. According to RUV, after counting 87,000 votes, 51.2% voted in favor of the initiative, while 48.8% voted against.

Icelandic voters were called to the polls on Saturday to respond to the crucial question: "Should Iceland resume negotiations for joining the European Union?" This decision comes at a difficult geopolitical moment, where security in the Arctic region is becoming increasingly important, and Iceland is seen as a low-risk candidate by officials in Brussels.

The results of the referendum will influence whether the island, with a population of approximately 400,000 residents, will resume EU accession negotiations, interrupted 13 years ago, or will postpone this option for the near future.
