Hannibal Gaddafi, the youngest son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was released on Monday after nearly a decade of detention in Lebanon, where he was accused of concealing information about the disappearance of Imam Moussa al-Sadr, a Shia Muslim cleric. Gaddafi was arrested in 2015 after being kidnapped in Syria, and he was held without trial. Human rights organizations contested the charges, deeming them unfounded. In 2023, he began a hunger strike, and his health deteriorated, requiring hospitalization. Recently, the Lebanese judiciary set an initial bail of 11 million dollars, which was later reduced to 900,000 dollars, thus allowing his release. The National Unity Government of Libya thanked the Lebanese authorities for their cooperation, emphasizing the desire to improve diplomatic relations between the two countries. The disappearance of Sadr has generated tensions between Libya and Lebanon for decades.
