The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, warned that humanity has failed to limit global warming to 1.5°C, emphasizing that exceeding this limit is now "inevitable" and will have "devastating consequences." In an interview given before the COP30 climate summit in Belem, Brazil, Guterres highlighted the risk that vital ecosystems such as the Amazon, the Arctic, and coral reefs could reach irreversible tipping points if emissions reductions are not urgently implemented.
The Secretary-General called on world leaders to immediately change the course of climate policies to limit the intensity and duration of global warming, warning that without concrete actions, the Amazon risks turning into a savanna.
