At the Economist conference in Bucharest, the Greek Minister of Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, emphasized the importance of energy security for maintaining freedom and stability in Europe. He stated that without reliable energy sources, citizens cannot live with dignity, economies do not function, and societies cannot prosper.

Papastavrou highlighted that Europe has learned important lessons in recent years, but not without difficulties, and mentioned that Europe's energy imports have significantly decreased, from 44% in 2021 to 19% in 2024, and it is estimated that they will reach 13% in 2025. He emphasized the importance of projects like the Vertical Corridor, which facilitates gas deliveries in Southeast Europe, and highlighted Greece's transition to renewable energy sources, which now contribute over 55% to the electricity consumed. At the same time, Greece continues to actively develop the hydrocarbon-based industry, emphasizing the need for a pragmatic approach in the energy sector.
