Greece’s Energy Minister, Stavros Papastavrou, rejected on Friday reports that US officials threatened Athens with political consequences during a dinner held in March last year. He made the statement in Parliament in response to a question from opposition lawmaker Alexandros Kazamias.

According to an article published by the Wall Street Journal, the dinner in Athens was attended by US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle and several Greek officials. The publication reported that Guilfoyle had suggested that the United States could create a situation in Greece similar to that in Romania, where the center-right government fell.

Papastavrou did not directly comment on the details of the report but categorically denied that any pressure or threats had occurred. He said Greek-American relations were at a historic level and were based on mutual respect.

The minister cited energy cooperation between the two countries, including exploration projects planned by Chevron and ExxonMobil. “My responsibility is not to comment on reports, but to defend the national interest,” Papastavrou said.
