Leading Democrats on the U.S. Congress foreign affairs committees have asked the State Department to review the conduct of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle following a Wall Street Journal investigation into the promotion of energy deals in southeastern Europe.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks requested documents and explanations from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They want information about the ambassador’s meetings with lobbyist Christos Marafatsos, her financial interests, and the support provided to the Greek company Aktor Group and its joint venture with DEPA. Meeks said that, if the information is confirmed, Guilfoyle should be dismissed.
The lawmakers also requested clarification regarding the use of private aircraft, including a trip paid for by Aktor’s director. The U.S. Embassy maintains that the ambassador complied with all ethics standards and rules governing official travel.
The WSJ investigation reported that Guilfoyle promoted a 20-year contract for the purchase of American liquefied natural gas. In March, in Athens, she allegedly made controversial statements about the possibility of changing Romania’s government, allegations contested by her lawyer. The scandal also sparked reactions in Bucharest, where political leaders denied any coordination with the ambassador regarding the government’s fall.
