Johann Wadephul, the German Foreign Minister, highlighted the risks of an escalation of the war in the Middle East, which could trigger a major global crisis. During a joint press conference with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, Wadephul mentioned that Germany, initially supportive of American and Israeli attacks on Iran, has become more critical as the conflict has intensified, affecting the economy and security of the European Union.
Wadephul emphasized the risks, including a possible food crisis due to the disruption of fertilizer supplies from the region, which could severely impact Africa. He also expressed concern about the refugee flows that could result from an escalation of the conflict. He desired a regime change in Iran but questioned the effectiveness of external military actions in achieving this goal.
Wadephul stressed the need for cooperation with the United States and Israel to achieve a de-escalation of hostilities, while ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz at the same time. In this context, European leaders rejected participation in security missions in the Strait of Hormuz, despite warnings from former President Trump regarding the future of NATO.
