Germany intends to abandon an old law from 1952 that allows 14 and 15-year-olds to consume alcohol in the company of their parents. A bill consulted by DPA provides for the prohibition of beer and wine consumption under parental supervision for minors, starting at the age of 14.

This measure comes in response to calls from health ministers from all German states, who have highlighted the risks of addiction associated with alcohol consumption by young people. Youth Minister Karin Prien included the repeal of this exception in her bill regarding the welfare of children and young people, arguing that the current regulation weakens the protection of young people against alcohol abuse.

The bill will be discussed with experts and requires the approval of the Cabinet and Parliament, without specifying yet the date of entry into force.
