A recent change in legislation in Germany, which came into effect at the beginning of the year, imposes an unusual obligation on men aged between 18 and 46: they must obtain approval from the military authorities (Bundeswehr) before leaving the country for more than three months. The publication Frankfurter Rundschau brought this information to the public's attention, in a context where discussions about the reintroduction of mandatory military service are becoming increasingly intense. Protests and critical reactions have not been long in coming, but the change has largely gone unnoticed. According to the new rules, men in the mentioned age range must apply for a permit from the Bundeswehr career center, regardless of the reason for leaving, whether it is for studies, work, or personal travel.

The purpose of this measure, according to the authorities, is to maintain a record of the population fit for military service, in case of a conflict. The Ministry of Defense has acknowledged the significant impact of the changes and is working on rules that would allow for exceptions. However, the penalties for those who do not comply with this obligation are unclear, which adds uncertainty. The measure comes at a time when Germany is reevaluating its defense policies and mobilization capacity, amid geopolitical changes in Europe.
