The German Bundestag has adopted a law aimed at strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructures, following acts of sabotage suspected to be linked to Russia. The new legislation will allow for the identification of essential infrastructures and will require their operators to implement enhanced security measures. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that Germany is facing threats such as sabotage and espionage, and infrastructures need to become more resilient. The law targets approximately 1,700 essential service providers, including electricity and water, requiring them to assess vulnerabilities and develop response plans.

Critics argue that the measures are insufficient and that the threshold of 500,000 residents for classifying critical infrastructures is too high. The law comes after a major sabotage incident in Berlin, which left over 100,000 people without electricity. The German government thus aims to improve the security of infrastructures, essential for the country's economy and population.
