American General Alexus G. Grynkewich, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe (SACEUR), stated that the withdrawal of 5,000 American soldiers from Europe, announced by President Donald Trump, will not affect NATO's defense capability.
During a meeting in Brussels with military leaders from NATO countries, Grynkewich emphasized that European allies and Canada are increasingly taking on responsibility in conventional defense. He explained that as the European pillar of the alliance becomes stronger, the U.S. can reduce its military presence in Europe, focusing on the critical capabilities needed.
The general mentioned the progress made by European allies in strengthening defense capabilities, including the multinational brigade in Latvia. He also assured that regional defense plans remain in place, despite the troop withdrawal.
