The aircraft was carrying out a surveillance mission as part of a NATO deployment, following the degradation of submarine cables suspected by Russia. The incident was denounced by the French military as an aggressive action, but was said to be quite widespread and extending beyond Europe's borders. Several undersea telecommunications and power cables have been damaged in the Baltic Sea in recent months and Russia is suspected of involvement.
