From today, people in England have access to a free gonorrhea vaccine, announced by the Department of Health and Social Care. Eligible patients will be contacted shortly and the vaccine will be distributed through local clinics. The program, based on an existing meningitis formula, has an efficacy between 32.7% and 42%. The initiative comes amid an alarming rise in gonorrhea cases, with 85,000 infections recorded in 2023. Analysis suggests the program could prevent up to 100,000 cases and save the NHS £7.9 million over the next 10 years.
