The Government is expected to approve, during an extraordinary meeting, the acceptance of a donation of 1.1 million vaccine doses offered to Romania by the European Commission to combat peste des petits ruminants and sheep and goat pox. The market value of the donation is 1,312,135 lei, while the formalities will be handled by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA).
The donation includes 300,000 doses of Pestevac, against peste des petits ruminants, and 800,000 doses of Jovivac, intended to combat sheep and goat pox. An initial batch of 300,000 doses arrived in Romania on October 22, while the remainder was scheduled to be delivered in stages by October 25.
Vaccination will be free and mandatory in the targeted areas, without farmers having to submit applications. Veterinary teams will use data from the National Database and will intervene as a priority in Constanța and Tulcea counties, as well as in active outbreak areas and restricted zones. Farmers must ensure access to the animals and provide the necessary conditions for vaccination.
The measure aims to stabilize the epidemiological situation, limit losses in the livestock sector, and create the conditions for lifting trade restrictions. Because of the outbreaks, Romania can currently export only carcasses and processed products. Authorities hope vaccination will allow the resumption of exports of live sheep and goats to third countries.
