Romania is expected to receive, starting October 24, 2026, a total of 1.1 million doses of vaccines to combat sheep and goat pox (SGP) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR). The doses will be supplied by the European Commission, more than a month after the Romanian authorities’ official request, and are necessary for the resumption of sheep and goat exports.
According to the European Commission, Romania will receive 800,000 doses of the vaccine against SGP and 300,000 doses against PPR. The Romanian authorities submitted the request on September 21, while the vaccination plans were sent two days later. After requesting additional clarifications on October 2, the Commission received Romania’s response on October 5 and activated the European vaccine banks on October 8.
The Commission states that the doses are intended to launch an emergency vaccination campaign, not to cover the entire national program or any potential booster doses.
The shortage of vaccines was also criticized by interim Agriculture Minister Tánczos Barna. Romania intends to reach approximately 10 million doses, including through additional purchases. ANSVSA will be able to begin vaccination after receiving the shipment.
