The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, announced on Tuesday that France will take an initiative at the United Nations to propose a framework for a neutral and peaceful mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
In an interview given in Nairobi, he emphasized the need for the unconditional reopening of the strait, without fees, by eliminating blockades and engaging in a demanding dialogue with Iran. Macron expressed concern over the escalation of statements between the United States and Iran, advocating for a respected ceasefire. France, together with the United Kingdom, proposes a multinational mission to secure this strategic maritime route, in consultation with Iran and the USA. The initiative is expected to materialize into a draft resolution in the UN Security Council. Macron insisted on the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz for the global economy, adding that the resumption of nuclear dialogue with Iran is necessary. Additionally, a draft resolution supported by the USA and Bahrain, which calls on Iran to cease attacks on ships, is under discussion but risks being blocked by a Russian veto.
