The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has been sentenced to death by a court for crimes against humanity, following a violent crackdown that led to the deaths of over 1,000 people during anti-government protests in 2024. Hasina was tried in absentia and stated that the verdict is biased and politically motivated. A UN report estimates that up to 1,400 people were killed during these events.
Hasina and the former interior minister have fled the country and are living in India, and the interim government has requested their extradition. Before the verdict was announced, security was tightened across the country, and Hasina's supporters called for a two-day strike. Hasina has stated that she is willing to be tried under international supervision, contesting the legitimacy of the trial. The court was initially established to prosecute collaborators from the Liberation War of 1971, but it has been expanded to prosecute leaders of the previous regime.
