In Tanzania, violence escalated during the presidential and parliamentary elections, resulting in approximately 700 deaths, according to the main opposition party, Chadema. Protests erupted amid a severe crackdown, with the most important opponents of President Samia Suluhu Hassan either imprisoned or disqualified. An AFP journalist reported gunfire in Dar es Salaam, where protesters set a police station on fire.

Security forces have also been accused of trying to control information about the number of victims. Despite the internet blackout and a state of emergency, protests continue, and the UN has called for the avoidance of disproportionate use of force. The election results are not known, but the ruling party, CCM, is expected to achieve a landslide victory, while the opposition party ACT-Wazalendo contests the results, alleging fraud.
