The EPPO investigation targets the use of €11.9 million of EU funds for a recycling project in Greece, where serious irregularities in waste management were identified. Audit reports revealed a lack of control over the destination of collected waste and problems with the operation of recycling centers. Greece faces significant fines for failing to meet EU waste management standards, with a recycling rate of just 17% compared with the EU average of 49%. EPPO is also investigating suspected fraud with EU funds in agriculture.
