The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced on Tuesday that searches were carried out at a hospital and at a county council in Muntenia, as part of an investigation into suspicions of fraud and abuse of office.
The investigation focuses on a project for the procurement of medical equipment and materials, funded with 4 million euros through the EU Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, aimed at reducing the risks of infections acquired in hospitals. EPPO specified that, in total, seven searches took place at business premises, public authorities, and the homes of suspects. Prosecutors suspect that the project's budget was artificially inflated, with nearly 70 price offers considered inauthentic.
The investigation was initiated by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) and is supported by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). The actions are being carried out with the support of the Romanian Police and the Gendarmerie.
