Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, according to projections by U.S. media outlets, dealing President Donald Trump’s Republicans a crushing defeat in the presidential midterm elections.
Democrats won Senate seats in several Republican strongholds, such as Kansas and Texas, and will be able to considerably limit the powers of the U.S. president until the end of his term.
Democrats will secure a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, taking control from Republicans. They will secure at least 218 seats, while Republicans will secure at least 160, according to CNN and CBS projections.
Democrat Josh Turek is projected by CBS News to win the Senate seat up for election in the state of Iowa. His victory would give Democrats a majority of 51 seats in the U.S. Senate, according to current estimates.
