The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has sued the BBC for defamation, accusing the television station of editing his speech from January 6, 2021, in a Panorama documentary. Trump is seeking $5 billion in damages for two allegations, including a violation of trade practices law. Although the BBC apologized in November, it rejected the claims for damages, contesting the basis of the defamation action. Trump's legal team argues that the BBC altered his speech with the intent to defame him, and Trump stated that he decided to take legal action to combat what he believes to be a manipulation of his words. In the broadcast documentary, a clip was interpreted as a call to violent actions, which the BBC acknowledged created a "misleading impression."
