President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are "safe" after being evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, where gunfire occurred, the U.S. Secret Service announced. The incident took place during the event, causing panic among the approximately 2,600 guests.
Donald Trump quickly praised the speed and courage of the security services, noting that a suspect was apprehended.
"What a night in Washington. The Secret Service and law enforcement did an extraordinary job. They acted with speed and courage. The shooter was apprehended and I recommended that 'the show must go on,' but we fully trust the decision of law enforcement. They will make a decision shortly,” Trump said.
Powerful explosions led to the evacuation of the entire hall, including government members, and police surrounded the area, with helicopters flying over downtown Washington. The Secret Service confirmed that all individuals under protection are safe.
