Before the announcement of a temporary ceasefire, Donald Trump had announced a proposal for an “energy truce” between Russia and Ukraine, without clear public details about the conditions, duration, or verification. Kyiv said it had not initially been informed and requested clarifications, while the discussion remained tied to reciprocity: Ukraine would halt attacks on Russian refineries if Moscow ceased strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
At the same time, the Kremlin stated, through spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, that Russia could order attacks to stop for one day so that presidential elections could be held in Ukraine, making the halt conditional on the actual organization of the vote. The statement came after Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for a 60-day ceasefire to organize the elections.
