U.S. President Donald Trump announced that, “with immediate effect,” an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine had supposedly entered into force. The message was published on Truth Social, but it provides no details about the measures agreed upon or the duration of the arrangement.
So far, neither Kyiv nor Moscow has confirmed the existence of the ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios that he was unaware of Trump’s announcement, but that Ukraine would accept the agreement if Russia also agreed. He asked the American leader to specify when the ceasefire was supposed to begin.
Earlier, Zelenskyy had stated that Ukraine is ready to stop attacks on Russian refineries if Moscow stops strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The leader in Kyiv emphasized that any measure to reduce tensions must be reciprocal and supported by real guarantees.
Trump’s announcement comes after he repeatedly criticized Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities and called on Zelenskyy to stop them. The message was published one day after the announcement of a controversial agreement between Washington and Moscow concerning the purchase of three million tons of Russian diesel fuel, an agreement criticized by Zelenskyy as favoring the financing of Russia’s war effort.
