Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly asked Melania Trump to mediate a ceasefire in the city of Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, which is under Russian occupation, according to Marc Beckman, the senior adviser to the U.S. First Lady. He claims that Putin sent Melania Trump an official letter in which Russia recognized her as the “exclusive intermediary.”
According to Beckman’s statements to the Kyiv Post, Melania Trump allegedly requested that the ceasefire be brought forward by two days and extended beyond Oleshky, to other areas of the Kherson region. The agreement would include the periodic delivery of aid, the demining of roads, and the evacuation of civilians to territory controlled by Ukraine.
Documents signed on October 23 by Russian and Ukrainian officials provide for transporting residents through Russia and Belarus. They would first travel to Anapa, then to Gomel, aboard a Russian military aircraft, with the flight scheduled for October 31.
Beckman says that representatives of the two sides met in Belarus and that, so far, the terms of the ceasefire have been respected. However, the details of the agreement have not been made public, at the request of both delegations.
The plan is viewed with skepticism by some experts, who argue that Putin could use Melania Trump’s involvement to bolster his image as a peacemaker among the MAGA electorate. Oleshky, a city with approximately 24,000 residents before the war, has been under Russian occupation since the first days of the full-scale invasion.
