A major outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) was caused by a DNS error, affecting hundreds of online platforms on Monday morning, including popular social networks and video games like Roblox and Fortnite. The problem occurred at Amazon's oldest data center in Virginia, an area known for its concentration of data centers. The outage began in the morning and affected over 100 AWS services, and Amazon announced that it had fixed the error around 6 PM. The DNS, which translates website names into IP addresses, was the main culprit, and the failures led to additional issues in the network, including with cloud computing services. Although DNS errors are common, the scale of this problem is rarely encountered. The Virginia region is crucial for the global internet infrastructure, and large companies continue to invest in new data centers, despite local environmental concerns. Amazon has not yet provided an official comment on the incident.
