The double earthquake in Venezuela, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, occurred on June 24 and resulted in 6,438 deaths, according to statements from the President of the Parliament, Jorge Rodriguez.
In the aftermath of the earthquakes, at least 190 buildings collapsed, affecting the state of La Guaira and other coastal areas. So far, the government has not provided information about the number of missing persons, and thousands of residents have been forced to live in temporary camps, often in precarious conditions, after heavy rains destroyed their tents.
Although the interim government promised 4,000 homes for the victims, only 335 have been available so far. The northern region of Venezuela is known for its intense seismic activity, and the recent earthquakes were caused by the movement of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates. Experts warn that the risk of aftershocks remains high, which could lead to new tragedies.
