David Petraeus, former director of the CIA, stated that the involvement of European countries in the joint military operation of the US and Israel against Iran is a possibility, although France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are considering a more defensive role. Petraeus emphasized that it would have been wise for Europeans to get involved from the beginning, considering the risks of escalating the conflict. He mentioned that European countries could significantly contribute to air and missile defense in the region, given that Iran will extend its ambitions beyond Israel and American bases.
The general ruled out the deployment of American ground troops in Iran, emphasizing that the president and the secretary of defense have been clear on this matter. Petraeus warned that, although Iran's ability to retaliate may decrease, there are increased risks of casualties among American forces and allies. He also discussed possible political changes in Iran, suggesting that a more pragmatic leadership could reconsider the country's regional role. This could lead to a change in the structure of the ruling elite, with fewer radical ideologues and more opportunistic figures.
