The hard-line Iranian newspaper Kayhan said Tuesday that US facilities in Romania, the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Albania and Cyprus could become targets if a new war breaks out between Iran and the United States. The statement comes amid heightened tensions and indirect talks conducted through Qatar.
The United States carried out what it described as “defensive” strikes on Qeshm Island the previous night, targeting Iranian surface-to-air missiles. US officials said the attacks were limited, but President Donald Trump did not rule out resuming military operations after the US midterm elections.
Trump said Washington was prepared to act if necessary, but maintained that negotiations over Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium were continuing. Tehran is demanding the lifting of oil sanctions, an end to the naval blockade and the release of Iranian funds to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatar is trying to mediate an agreement, but Iranian officials say the US response was unconvincing. Iran warns that it will respond firmly to any attack, while its military is updating its lists of American and Israeli targets. In parallel, Tehran is holding talks with Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan on new regional security arrangements.
