Starting January 1, Cyprus, one of the smallest countries in Europe, will take over the presidency of the EU Council, having the responsibility to coordinate solutions for the overlapping crises facing the Union. This small, militarily neutral state will manage sensitive topics, from responding to Russia's aggression to saving critical industries and reforming European legislation. The challenges are unprecedented, and Cyprus is logistically preparing for this task, including by recruiting additional staff and establishing direct flights between Brussels and Nicosia.
European diplomats recognize the difficulties that Cyprus will encounter, but they appreciate the efforts made to prepare. Among the topics on the presidency's agenda are environmental regulations for the automotive industry and building the EU's long-term budget. Cyprus, which has cultivated relations with Moscow, aims to demonstrate solidarity with Western allies by withdrawing Russian citizens from a 'golden passport' scheme.
The Cypriot government wants to use this opportunity to improve its international reputation, highlighting the stability and economic strength of the country. Additionally, Cyprus has been involved in recent international diplomacy, contributing to humanitarian aid efforts in the context of the conflict in Gaza. This presidency follows those held by Poland and Denmark, and Cyprus hopes to expand its diplomatic footprint in this role.
