Christa Pike, a death-row inmate in Tennessee, said one month after her failed execution that she continues to suffer from constant physical pain and psychological distress. The woman is being treated in the infirmary at the Debra Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, following 10 days of intensive hospital treatment.
Pike was subjected to execution on September 30 for the 1995 murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, when Pike was 18. Members of the execution team spent nearly an hour trying to insert an intravenous line to administer five grams of pentobarbital, but the procedure failed and the inmate survived.
In a statement released by her attorneys, Pike criticized the “incompetence” that led to the situation and said her entire body hurts, including her arms, hands and neck. She said she continues to have difficulty speaking and is being kept largely in isolation.
Governor Bill Lee suspended executions in Tennessee pending the completion of an independent review. It is unclear whether Pike’s sentence will be upheld or whether authorities will try to set a new execution date.
