Christa Pike, the woman sentenced to death in Tennessee, is conscious and speaking after surviving, last week, an failed attempt at execution by lethal injection. She remains hospitalized and is receiving emergency medical care while still being kept shackled, her lawyers announced.
Pike, 50, remained unconscious for several days after authorities twice attempted to administer pentobarbital to her. Doctors subsequently removed the substance from her body, but her prognosis remains uncertain. Her lawyers say the woman suffered severe injuries to her arms, while experts fear possible neurological damage as well.
According to specialists, the case is unprecedented because the substance was injected, but the execution did not have a lethal effect. One possible explanation is that the pentobarbital may have spread into the tissue beneath the skin without fully entering the bloodstream.
Authorities have not announced whether they will attempt the execution again. The governor of Tennessee has suspended all executions until the end of the year. Pike was convicted of murdering Colleen Slemmer in 1995.
