Christa Pike, sentenced to death in Tennessee for the murder of Colleen Slemmer in 1995, woke up on Tuesday, October 7, six days after authorities attempted to execute her by lethal injection. She is considered the first known person to have survived after being administered the substances used in an execution.
Pike opened her eyes while doctors were preparing to disconnect her from the life-support machines. According to her attorney, Randy Spivey, her first words were “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”. The woman is partially conscious but in serious condition, confused and angry.
She cannot move her arms or swallow, has pneumonia, a blood clot in her arm, and cognitive problems. Doctors estimate that it could take weeks or months before they are able to assess her recovery.
The execution attempt took place on September 30 and reportedly failed due to a possible problem with the intravenous line. Tennessee has not yet provided an official explanation. Attorneys are seeking commutation of the sentence, while a judge has ordered the preservation of all evidence related to the procedure.
The case led to the postponement of another execution and the resignation of the head of the state prison system.
