China has classified Japan's plan to deploy surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island, the closest to Taiwan, as 'dangerous' in the context of tensions between Beijing and Tokyo. The Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted to statements by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, who claimed that the plan is 'on the right track.' A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry accused Japan of deploying offensive weapons with the aim of provoking regional tensions and military confrontations.
China, which claims Taiwan, considers the statements of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to be provocative, emphasizing that it is determined to defend its sovereignty. In contrast, the Taiwanese government has supported Japan's right to protect its security, noting that Yonaguni has no territorial claims against Taiwan. The island already hosts a base of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and Tokyo intends to install missiles to defend against aerial threats.
