China described the U.S. midterm elections on Wednesday as “an internal matter” and said it was prepared to continue cooperating with the United States, including in areas where the two countries hold divergent views.
The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during a press conference. The official said that Beijing was willing to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthen communication, and properly manage differences.
China’s reaction comes after Tuesday’s elections, following which, according to projections by U.S. media, the Democrats took control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress. After securing a majority in the House of Representatives, the Democrats won Senate seats in several Republican strongholds, including Kansas and Texas.
The election result could allow them to considerably limit President Donald Trump’s powers until the end of his term. In his first reaction, Trump adopted a conciliatory tone and did not take responsibility for the Republicans’ defeat. Democratic control of Congress could also influence the U.S. administration’s policy regarding the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.
