Iran's chief negotiator in talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Wednesday that American voters had sent an anti-war message in the midterm elections. The reaction comes after the Democrats' victory in both chambers of Congress, a defeat that Donald Trump partly attributed to the conflict in Iran.
“Whether out of conscience or because of the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we support this message,” Ghalibaf wrote on the X platform.
In a phone interview with Fox News, Trump acknowledged that the war in Iran contributed to the Republicans' poor result. The Democrats' victory opens a period of uncertainty for the president, two years before the end of his term.
The conflict in the Middle East began after the Israeli-American attacks on Iran on February 28. Since then, Tehran has targeted vessels attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz without authorization, while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. The disruption of a route through which approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed before the war led to an increase in fuel prices. Iran has declared itself willing to reopen the strait if the United States accepts a series of conditions.
