U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called on Wednesday, during a press conference, for an end to the war in Iran, following the severe electoral defeat suffered by Republicans and President Donald Trump in the midterm elections.
Schumer said that the American people do not know what they are fighting for in Iran and criticized Trump for frequently changing his position. The Democratic senator argued that the new Congress will be able to use its control over spending to challenge any potential additional military funding and to support a diplomatic solution.
Vice President JD Vance, for his part, stated that the war in Iran was the cause of the Republicans’ defeat. He argued that any discussion about the party’s future must begin with this result.
Following the Democrats’ victory, the price of Brent crude fell below 100 dollars per barrel. Analysts believe that the election result could limit Trump’s room for maneuver and increase pressure for credible negotiations and for securing transport through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, described the result as a strategic and political defeat for Trump and warned that any attack on Iran would have consequences.
