US Vice President JD Vance said on Wednesday, November 4, that the war with Iran was the main reason the Republican Party lost the elections and control of Congress. He made the remarks after Democrats secured majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
In a message posted on X, Vance said Republicans must acknowledge the conflict’s political impact before deciding the party’s direction. He stated that any honest discussion about the party’s future must begin with the fact that the war contributed decisively to the electoral defeat.
The conflict against Iran was launched in February 2026 by the United States and Israel, during Donald Trump’s second term. The US president acknowledged that Iran was “part of the problem,” but said he did not regret the decision and would do the same again.
Vance’s position may indicate an attempt to distance himself from the war, as he is considered a possible Republican candidate in the 2028 presidential election. Losing control of Congress will make it more difficult for the Trump administration to advance its legislative agenda during the final two years of its term.
