China is expanding its nuclear arsenal faster than any other country, with at least 600 nuclear warheads currently in place and an estimated 1,500 by 2035. Although a foreign ministry spokesman declined to comment on the SIPRI report, he reaffirmed China's policy of self-defense and commitment not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states. China's nuclear capabilities are a concern for Taiwan and regional stability amid threats of US intervention.
