North Korea on Wednesday criticized the United States over its arms sales and military support for Taiwan, accusing Washington of fueling tensions in the Taiwan Strait and undermining regional peace. The reaction was conveyed by state news agency KCNA, which quoted analyst Kim Myong Chol.
Pyongyang's comment came after the arrival in Taiwan of the first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from a batch of 66 ordered by Taipei in 2019. Kim Myong Chol warned that the United States should consider whether it is prepared for a direct confrontation with China and its consequences.
Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any official contact between Taiwanese and foreign leaders. China has repeatedly called on Washington to halt arms deliveries, while the United States is legally required to support the island's ability to defend itself.
In June, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his support for the “one China” principle during a meeting with President Xi Jinping. Separately, Pyongyang expressed its support for Russia, with which it has strengthened relations following the signing of a mutual defense pact in 2024.
