Bulgaria intends to build a closed-type center for migrants at the border with Romania, on the site of a former military unit near the locality of Senovo. The mayor of the town of Vetovo, Dr. Mehmed Mehmed, stated that the prefect of Ruse, Dragomir Draganov, has initiated the procedures for acquiring the building and has obtained funding of approximately 7.7 million euros from the State Agency for Refugees. The center will have 400 places and will include facilities such as a canteen and laundry.
The project aims to provide temporary accommodation for migrants crossing the Bulgarian-Romanian border until their status is resolved. The mayor emphasized the importance of carrying out this project without causing tensions in the local community. It is also estimated that around 80 jobs will be created, with priority for locals. The construction will be funded from European funds, under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027. The president of the State Agency for Refugees mentioned that Bulgaria is obliged to build two centers of this type by 2027, according to the new Pact on Migration and Asylum of the European Union.
