The European Commission has confirmed that Bulgaria will adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, emphasizing that this plan will not be affected by the internal political situation. The announcement came after the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov and in the context of anti-government protests that took place in the country.
Although the President of Bulgaria, Roumen Radev, and a pro-Russian opposition party have expressed concerns regarding the country's preparation for the euro, the Commission reaffirmed that Bulgaria has met the necessary criteria for accession. The Commission's spokesperson stated that all necessary decisions have been made and that the accession process remains in effect, regardless of political developments. Additionally, the Bulgarian Parliament has rejected initiatives to organize a referendum on this issue, with the majority of members in favor of entering the eurozone.
