Bulgarian Defense Minister Atanas Zaprianov announced at a forum in Sofia that the country will increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2032 amid threats from Russia. Bulgaria will reach a target of 2% of GDP by 2024, but considers this level insufficient to modernize its armed forces. The defense ministry is working actively with the local defense industry and aims to use EU mechanisms to increase fiscal flexibility, while maintaining a conservative policy in the run-up to eurozone membership.
