The House of Commons has approved an amendment that will prevent women from being criminally punished for abortions, following a statement by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, who highlighted the unfairness of prosecuting illegal abortions, including cases of miscarriages. The amendment was adopted with 379 votes in favor and 137 against. The bill now needs to be approved by the House of Lords. Currently, abortions are legal up to 24 weeks in England, Scotland and Wales.
